A skin cancer clinic on Bathurst Street in central Hobart — a medical fit-out where the finish has to meet clinical requirements and still feel like somewhere a nervous patient is willing to sit.
The brief
Reception and a waiting area at the front, a corridor spine, then consulting and treatment rooms along it. Every surface in the clinical zones has to be sealed, wipeable and hard-wearing; every room needs the power, data and lighting a procedure requires, in the right place, first time. Behind that, a street-front shopfront that had to read as calm and professional from the footpath.
What makes a medical fit-out different
Two things. The first is that the requirements are not negotiable — infection control, clearances and clinical services are set by what happens in the room, not by preference, so they have to be resolved in the drawings rather than on site.
The second is the setting. This is a tenancy in a working city street, so deliveries, noise and access all run to somebody else’s rules. That is a program problem as much as a building one, and it is solved the same way a fixed opening date is: sequence it backwards, order the long-lead items early, and keep the price visible so a change is a decision rather than a dispute.
