House on the Green
House on the Green stands at Westbury, on the flat farmland west of Launceston where frost settles early and the sky is very large.
The brief
A custom Forever Home suited to a rural Tasmanian block — generous, grounded, and built for a climate that gets genuinely cold overnight for a good part of the year.
The build
Westbury and the surrounding country sit in frost-hollow terrain. Cold air pools on flat, open land overnight, so a home here spends more hours at low external temperatures than the annual averages suggest. Insulation continuity and airtightness matter more on this kind of block than on a sheltered urban lot, and glazing has to be specified for the overnight condition rather than the midday one.
Rural sites also bring their own practical work: services that may need to be brought a long way, site access that has to survive a wet winter of deliveries, and stormwater that has nowhere convenient to go. All of it is resolved and priced at feasibility stage rather than discovered during construction.
The result
A warm, settled home that suits its landscape — the kind of house that looks like it has always been there, which is generally the point of building in country like this.
