A century-old Sandy Bay home brought carefully into a new century.

The brief

Verndene was a 100-year-old home that deserved a future, not a facelift. The brief was to modernise how it lives — comfort, light, services — while respecting the character that made it worth keeping. In a suburb like Sandy Bay, that balance is the whole job: lose the character and you’ve lost the reason the house mattered in the first place.

The build

Working with designer John Weston, our team resolved old and new so they read as one home: original character retained, contemporary performance and detailing threaded through. A heritage-era renovation surfaces the unexpected by nature, and this one rewarded exactly what the owners came to value most — communication. Matt and Josh ran the job with the owners in the loop throughout — professional, respectful and collaborative, in the owners’ words — and never hesitated to suggest an alternate option where it would improve or enhance the outcome. When contractor issues arose, they were resolved with the owners’ interests front and centre: the quiet discipline that separates a well-managed renovation from a stressful one.

The result

In the owner’s words, we brought a hundred-year-old home into a new century — and they’d recommend the team to anyone considering a heritage-style renovation. Photographed by Tassie Visuals, Verndene now carries its second century the way it carried its first: as a home worth keeping.

In the owner's words

“ZB did a fantastic job in bringing our 100 year old home into a new century. Communication with Matt and Josh was always professional, respectful and collaborative. They didn't hesitate to suggest alternate options to improve or enhance different aspects along the way. Contractor issues were always resolved with our interests front and center. Would definitely recommend the team to anyone considering a heritage style renovation.”
