Asgard — Main Bathroom

Asgard is the director’s own Launceston home, and the standard applied here was the standard applied to a house that went on to win Best Use of Australian Made Products at the 2024 Master Builders Australia national awards.
The brief
A main bathroom that would carry the material language of the wider home — Australian-made where possible, warm rather than clinical — while working as a genuinely relaxing room rather than a showpiece.
The build
A freestanding tub is a deceptively demanding element. It has to be positioned so the room composes around it, serviced from below with no visible compromise, and set on a floor built to carry it full. Floating joinery adds a second constraint: the wall behind it has to be framed for load long before anyone selects a vanity.
The honed stone and timber pairing is where the room earns its warmth. Honed rather than polished stone reads softer under light and, more practically, does not turn a wet floor into a hazard.
The result
A room that feels considered rather than styled, and one that has held up to daily family use — the real test, and the reason it is worth photographing years after completion.
