Villa Donini — Bathroom
The main bathroom at Villa Donini is the most decorated single room we have built. It won Bathroom of the Year over $30,000 at the 2024 HIA Tasmania awards and the 2024 Master Builders Tasmania Bathroom Project award, and the wider Villa Donini interior took HIA Tasmania’s Interior Cabinetry and Interior Design titles in the same year.
Four awards across one project is not an accident of styling. It is what happens when stone, joinery, tapware and lighting are resolved together as a single problem rather than specified separately and assembled on site.
The brief
A main bathroom that would hold its own as a piece of design while working as the busiest wet area in the house. That combination is harder than it sounds — competition-grade detailing tends to assume nobody will actually use the room.
The build
Bathrooms are where a builder’s tolerances become visible. Stone has to meet joinery without a shadow gap doing the apologising; tapware has to land exactly where the setout said it would, because plumbing rough-in happens months before anyone sees the wall; falls have to work without reading as slopes. Every one of those is decided long before the tiler arrives, in setout and sequencing.
The interior cabinetry award alongside the bathroom titles reflects that the joinery was treated as architecture rather than storage.
The result
A room that reads as calm and inevitable, which is the hardest thing to achieve in a small, service-heavy space — and the reason the judges kept coming back to it.
